Hello again, global explorers! Welcome back to Kiki's Paw Prints.
It’s your favorite Seoul insider, Kiki 🐾.
Today, I’ve smoothed down my elegant male Hanbok, and the cream-colored stripes on my forehead and tail are twitching with excitement! Why? Because today we are riding Subway Line 5 (The Purple Line).
If Line 4 was about dramatic contrasts, Line 5 is the "Soul of Seoul." It seamlessly connects South Korea's majestic royal history, its glittering modern financial district along the Han River, and the deeply authentic alleyways where true locals eat. Plus, it directly connects to Gimpo International Airport!
Grab your transit card, follow my paw prints, and let’s explore the absolute best stops on the Purple Line.
👑 1. Gwanghwamun Station (Station 533): "The Heart of Royal History"
📌 Why Visit
Gwanghwamun is the grand center of Seoul. Stepping out of the station, you are immediately greeted by the towering statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, with the breathtaking Gyeongbokgung Palace and mountains serving as the ultimate backdrop.
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- Gwanghwamun Book Yard: Skip the crowded palace cafes and head to Gwanghwamun Square. Recently renovated, it now features an outdoor library concept where you can sit on beanbags under the sun, read a book, and enjoy the historical view like a modern Seoulite.
🍽️ Must-Eat
- Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup): Just a short walk from the station, you will find legendary restaurants serving boiling stone pots of whole young chicken stuffed with sweet rice, ginseng, and jujube. It is the ultimate Korean soul food meant to boost your energy after a long day of walking.

🏮 2. Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station (Station 534): "Retro Hanoks & Night Markets"
📌 Why Visit
This is where the magic of "Newtro" (New + Retro) happens. Jongno 3-ga is home to Ikseon-dong, a labyrinth of beautifully preserved 1920s Hanoks that have been transformed into Seoul’s most aesthetic cafes, conceptual restaurants, and boutique shops.
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- Pojangmacha (Orange Tent) Street: When the sun goes down, the streets outside Exit 3 transform into a vibrant outdoor street food market. Sit on plastic stools under iconic bright orange tents, drink Soju, and eat spicy street food. It’s a scene straight out of a K-Drama!
🍽️ Must-Eat
- Korean Souffle Pancakes: Ikseon-dong is famous for its dessert culture. Find a cafe hidden inside a traditional Hanok courtyard and order a tower of ultra-fluffy, jiggly souffle pancakes topped with fresh strawberries and sweet cream.
🌊 3. Yeouido Station (Station 526): "The Manhattan of Seoul"
📌 Why Visit
Yeouido is Seoul’s financial hub, located on an island in the Han River. It is the absolute best place to experience modern luxury and riverside relaxation.
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- The Hyundai Seoul: Don't miss this massive, futuristic shopping mall. Unlike traditional malls, it features a massive indoor botanical garden, a cascading waterfall, and pop-up stores from the trendiest K-Pop and local streetwear brands.[The Hyundai Seoul : 108 1F Yeoui-daero, Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul]
🍽️ Must-Eat (The Ultimate Local Vibe)
- Hangang Park "Chimaek" (Chicken & Beer): Head to Yeouido Hangang Park, rent a picnic mat, and order fried chicken delivery right to the riverside. Eating crispy Korean fried chicken while watching the city lights reflect on the Han River is an absolute must-do.

🥢 4. Gongdeok Station (Station 527): "The Food Alley of Legends"
📌 Why Visit
While tourists flock to Myeongdong, locals go to Gongdeok after work. This station is famous for its deep-rooted culinary history and massive food alleys that have been serving hungry workers for decades.
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- Gyeongui Line Forest Park: Walk off your heavy meals by strolling along this beautiful urban park built on abandoned railway tracks. It stretches from Gongdeok towards Hongdae and is lined with cozy local pubs.
[Gyeongui Line Forest Park : 133 Donggyo-ro 51-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul]
🍽️ Must-Eat
- Gongdeok Traditional Marke: Prepare to be amazed. This alley features endless stalls frying hundreds of different types of Jeon (savory pancakes made with seafood, meat, and vegetables). You grab a basket, pick whatever you want, and they fry it fresh for you to enjoy with a cold bowl of Makgeolli (rice wine). Also our special menu item is none other than "Jokbal"! Its plump and chewy texture is superb. If you come to Gongdeok, be sure to try the Jokbal. You will regret it later if you don't have a piece of Jokbal with a glass of Makgeolli!

🐾 Kiki’s Subway "Pro-Tips" for the Purple Line
To travel Line 5 like a true expert, keep these tips in your pocket:
- The Airport Express: Line 5 starts at Gimpo International Airport (Station 512). If you are flying domestically to Jeju Island, or arriving from Japan/China, the Purple Line will take you straight into the heart of Seoul!
- Beware of the "Y" Split: Heading East, Line 5 splits into two different directions at Gangdong Station. One goes to Macheon, and the other goes to Hanam Pungsan. Always check the overhead monitors to ensure you are on the right train if you are leaving the city center!
- The Deepest Tunnels: Because Line 5 passes under the Han River (rather than over a bridge), its stations are built incredibly deep underground. Be prepared for a few extra escalator rides, especially at Yeouinaru Station!
