Cheonggyecheon Stream Walk Part 3: Time Travel to Dongdaemun (DDP)

Hello, global travelers! It’s your favorite local guide, Kiki 🐾.

alt="South Korea Seoul Travel Guide Kiki"
Welcome to the grand finale of our Cheonggyecheon Stream series! I am sporting my traditional Korean Hanbok as always—feeling the cool Seoul evening breeze ruffle my ears since I'm going hat-free for tonight's adventure!

In Part 1 and 2, we explored the modern center and the retro "Hip-jiro" alleys. Now, in Part 3 (Majeongyo to Dongdaemun), we are going on a visual time travel. We will start in the nostalgic 1960s alleys of Seoul's textile history and end up in the year 2026, standing beneath a massive silver spaceship—the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP).

Because Dongdaemun is a city that never sleeps, this route is highly recommended for late afternoon to evening. Let’s dive into the ultimate Seoul night out!

🗺️ Hidden Gems: The Part 3 Route

1. Pyeonghwa Market & Secondhand Book Street (청계천 헌책방거리)

As you walk past Majeongyo, look up to see the long, continuous building of Pyeonghwa Market. This is the birthplace of Korea's modern fashion industry. Right along the stream level here is the Secondhand Book Street. Operating since the 1960s, these tiny, ceiling-high bookstores offer a beautiful, nostalgic aesthetic. It’s a fantastic spot for portrait photography with a deep, analog Seoul vibe.

2. The Historic Ruins: Igansugyo Water Gate (이간수문)

Just before you reach DDP, you will encounter the restored Igansugyo Water Gate. During the Joseon Dynasty, this arched stone gate controlled the water flowing out of the city walls. Today, beautifully illuminated at night, it serves as a powerful historical anchor sitting right next to the futuristic DDP. The contrast is absolutely breathtaking.

3. The Grand Finale: Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) 🌟 Kiki’s Pick!

You have arrived! Designed by Zaha Hadid, DDP looks like a massive silver UFO that has landed in the middle of Seoul.

Kiki’s 2026 Insider Tip: You must visit DDP after sunset! In 2026, the "Seoul Light" Media Facade has been upgraded to a year-round interactive exhibition. The entire 220-meter silver exterior of the building becomes a massive, moving canvas of digital art. Grab a seat on the grassy hill of the DDP park and watch the mesmerizing light show for free.

🕒 Quick Info for Visitors (2026 Update)

  • Seoul Light DDP: Nightly shows at 19:00, 20:00, 21:00 (Duration: 15 mins).
  • Best View Point: The 'Mirai-ro' bridge connecting DDP and the park.
  • Note: In case of heavy rain, outdoor media shows may be suspended.

🍜 Local Eats: Modern Tastes of Dongdaemun

Dongdaemun is a bustling district full of life both in the morning and evening. As a local, I would like to introduce you to the best recommended cafes and restaurants to enjoy in Dongdaemun.

☕ Recommended Cafe: "Sulbing" (설빙 동대문점)

[Seoul, Jung District, Eulji-ro, 254 / 2F]

A refreshing dessert to save you from the exhaustion of traveling on a day when the weather suddenly gets hot! Are you familiar with the Korean dessert, Bingsu? The Bingsu at Sulbing is a delicacy perfect for hot weather, made with a milk ice base and various toppings to enjoy chilled.
  • Why it’s special: Sulbing offers a variety of flavors based on diverse toppings and is a sanctuary where you can instantly heal your tired body after a long walk in the heat. Why not take a rest at Sulbing to recover from your travels?

🍲 Hidden Gems: "Jeonjujip" (전주집)

[5 Jong-ro 40ga-gil, Jongno District, Seoul]

If you are in Dongdaemun, there is a restaurant you absolutely must visit. It is "Jeonjujip," famous for its grilled fish. As a local, I frequent this place; it is a popular local eatery visited by many, and in addition to a variety of grilled fish dishes, delicious stews and side dishes are provided for free.

  • Why it’s special: This restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring various grilled fish such as mackerel, Spanish mackerel, hairtail, and pollack, as well as spicy stir-fried pork and stir-fried squid. Come and enjoy a hearty meal at affordable prices.

  • 🐾 Kiki’s Travel Tips for Dongdaemun

  • Night Owl Paradise: DDP and the surrounding wholesale fashion malls truly come alive after 8:00 PM and stay open until the early morning. Take a nap during the day if you plan to shop!
  • Tax-Free Kiosks: In 2026, the major malls around DDP (like Doota and Hyundai City Outlet) have automated Tax-Free kiosks on the ground floors. Keep your passport handy to get instant refunds on your fashion finds.
  • Stream Exit: To enter DDP directly from Cheonggyecheon, use the pedestrian ramps near Ogansugyo Bridge. They lead you straight into the futuristic plaza.
