Hello, global explorers! It’s your elegant, Hanbok-wearing feline guide, Kiki 🐾.
Today, my tail is swishing with golden energy because we are riding Subway Line 9 (The Gold Line)!
For many tourists arriving at Gimpo International Airport, the Gold Line is your very first taste of Seoul. It is the only subway line in the city that runs a dual "Express" and "All-Stop" train system, zipping you straight through the southern half of the city. It connects tranquil ecological islands and budget street food alleys directly to the ultra-wealthy, neon-lit heart of Gangnam.
Grab your T-Money card, pay attention to the train screens, and let’s explore the absolute best stops on the Gold Line!
🌿 1. Seonyudo Station (Station 913): "The Ecological Island"
📌 Why Visit
Escape the concrete jungle! A short walk from the station takes you across a picturesque bridge to Seonyudo Park, an island in the middle of the Han River. It was once a water purification plant, but the industrial ruins have been beautifully reclaimed by nature, creating a stunning, aesthetic park.
[Seonyudo Park : 343 Seonyu-ro, Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul]
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- The Greenhouse & Water Gardens: As you stroll among the ivy-covered concrete pillars, you will discover the Seonyudo Park Aquatic Plant Garden. It is one of Seoul's most unique and little-known photo spots, beloved by families and couples.
🍽️ Must-Eat
- Cafe Naru: Inside the park, there is a cafe shaped like a boat overlooking the Han River. Grab a warm cup of Korean sweet potato latte and a slice of cake while watching the sunset reflect off the water.
[Cafeteria Naru : 95 Yanghwa-dong, Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul]
🍚 2. Noryangjin Station (Station 917): "The Budget Food Mecca"
📌 Why Visit
Noryangjin is famous for its massive wholesale fish market, but it is also the legendary home of Seoul's "Study Village." Because thousands of students live here preparing for civil service exams, it has developed the cheapest, most delicious street food culture in the entire city.
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- Cupbap (Cup Rice) Street: Do not leave without visiting this iconic alley. You will find endless rows of street stalls selling Cupbap—large paper cups filled with warm rice, spicy pork, fried eggs, spam, kimchi, and mayonnaise.
[Noryangjin Cupbap Street : 148-88 Noryangjin-dong, Dongjak District, Seoul] - Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market: As one of the largest fish markets in Seoul, South Korea, Noryangjin Fish Market is a place where you can enjoy various fresh seafood at affordable prices. When purchasing seafood, do not buy immediately; try haggling over the price! You can enjoy it at an even lower price.[Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market : 674 Nodeul-ro, Dongjak District, Seoul]
🍽️ Must-Eat
- The $3 Feast: A massive, incredibly filling Cupbap costs around 4,000 to 5,000 KRW (roughly $3-$4 USD). Pair it with some cheap, freshly made Korean pancakes (Jeon) from the neighboring stalls. It is the ultimate backpacker’s dream!
🌃 3. Sinnonhyeon Station (Station 925): "The Heart of Gangnam"
📌 Why Visit
Step out of the station, and you are instantly hit with the dazzling neon lights and chaotic energy of Gangnam. Sinnonhyeon is where the trendiest locals go for nightlife, luxury shopping, and endless entertainment.
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- Gangnam Food Alley (먹자골목): The food alley at Sinnonhyeon Station is broadly divided into two sections, and the atmosphere differs completely depending on the exit. First, the food alley accessible immediately upon exiting Exit 5 has a sophisticated atmosphere and is frequently visited by office workers. On the other hand, if you exit through Exit 8 and enter the alley, you will find a food alley with a youthful and lively atmosphere, mainly frequented by people in their 20s.
- [Starting point of the food alley at Sinnonhyeon Station Exit 5 : Seoul, Gangnam District, Bongeunsa-ro 2-gil, 10]
- [Starting point of the food alley at Sinnonhyeon Station Exit 8 : 449-3 Gangnam-daero, Seocho District, Seoul]
🍽️ Must-Eat
- Premium K-BBQ & Highballs: Gangnam is the perfect place to treat yourself. Find an upscale Korean BBQ restaurant serving thick, juicy Samgyeopsal (pork belly) cooked perfectly by the staff, and pair it with a trendy Earl Grey Highball!
📚 4. Bongeunsa Station (Station 929): "Ancient Temples & Modern Malls"
📌 Why Visit
This station presents the most dramatic contrast in Seoul. On one side of the street is the world-famous Starfield Library "Byeolmadang Library," perfect for taking photos, and underground is the massive shopping center COEX Mall, while across the street is Bongeunsa Temple, a tranquil temple amidst the bustling city center.
👀 Kiki’s Hidden Gem
- Bongeunsa Temple: Built in 794, this serene Buddhist temple sits quietly amidst towering 2026 skyscrapers. Walk up to see the massive 23-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha statue. The contrast between the ancient chanting and the modern city skyline is simply breathtaking.
[Bongeunsa Temple : 531 Bongeunsa-ro, Gangnam District, Seoul]
🍽️ Must-Eat
- Temple Stay Tea / COEX Dining: For a spiritual experience, enjoy traditional lotus tea at the temple's teahouse. For modern cravings, dive into the COEX Mall food court to find everything from Michelin-starred noodle shops to gourmet vegan burgers.
🐾 Kiki’s Subway "Pro-Tips" for the Gold Line (CRITICAL!)
Pay close attention, travelers! Line 9 operates differently from every other line in Seoul:
- Express (급행) vs. All-Stop (일반): Line 9 has two types of trains running on the same tracks.
🔴 Red Text on the screen/train: EXPRESS. It skips many smaller stations. Perfect for getting across the city incredibly fast (e.g., Gimpo Airport directly to Gangnam).
🟢 Green/Yellow Text: ALL-STOP. It stops at every single station.
Always check the electronic signs before boarding to ensure the train stops at your destination! - The Gimpo Airport Connection: Station 902 connects directly to Gimpo International Airport. If you are flying domestically to Jeju Island or arriving from nearby Asian countries, the Gold Line Express will shoot you straight into Gangnam in about 35 minutes!
- Beware the "Hell Line": Locals affectionately call Line 9 the "Hell Line" during rush hour (7:30 AM - 9:00 AM, and 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM). The Express trains get dangerously crowded. If you have large luggage, strictly avoid these hours!
